Thinking About Auto Insurance
Sure, we want to save you money! We believe that MEEMIC consistently saves our customers premium dollars on "apples to apples" coverages. We love it when we can save a new customer hundreds of dollars! While some insurance companies may periodically have a "sale" to encourage policyholders to switch companies, these companies usually raise their prices again once they have additional customers (hoping that the policyholders won't go through the hassle of switching again). We believe that MEEMIC consistently offers the best combination of consistent coverages, service, and prices.
While we strive to save you money, we also want you to have excellent and appropriate coverages for your insurance needs. "Cheap" coverage is no bargain! We want you to have the best value for your insurance dollar. Therefore, please look over your Declaration Pages and Policy Contracts and call us or make an appointment if you have any questions or concerns about the coverages. We would be happy to speak with you, review your coverages, and answer your questions!
In today's litigious society, we highly recommend that our customers purchase as much liability coverage as they can afford. Bodily Injury Liability coverage on your automobile policy protects you if you injure another driver and get sued. MEEMIC offers up to $500,000 per person / $500,000 per incident in liability coverage on their auto policies, and you can raise your liability coverages for less money than you may think. While the Michigan state minimum for BI liability coverage is only $20,000 / $40,000, and almost all of our customers have at least $100,000 / $300,000 in coverage, we believe that raising your liability coverages even higher to $250,000 / $500,000 or $500,000 / $500,000 is an excellent investment of premium dollars in today's world. BI Liability Coverage price rates differ according to the driver's age, driving record, and type of vehicle. Call us and we will quote you the numbers for your particular policy.
We also highly recommend that our customers purchase Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist coverages. Uninsured motorist coverage protects you and your resident relatives if any of these insureds sustain bodily injury in an accident in which the owner or operator of a motor vehicle who is legally liable does not have insurance. Underinsured motorist coverage protects you and your resident relatives if any of these insureds sustain bodily injury in an accident in which the owner of a motor vehicle who is legally liable has liability insurance less than your underinsured motorist coverage. (The Michigan state minimum of Bodily Injury Liability Coverage is $20,000 / $40,000.) MEEMIC now offers $100,000 per person / $300,000 per incident coverages on both Uninsured and Underinsured coverages. We highly recommend that you call us and add these important coverages to your automobile policy!
Does your health insurance primarily pay for your medical and hospitalization expenses if you are in an automobile accident? Surprisingly, many health insurance companies (including Medicare) now require that their policyholders have their automobile insurance policies primarily cover such medical expenses. Ask your health insurance provider if they offer primary medical coverage if you are in an automobile accident. If they say "no," then you should have "Full PIP" on your auto policy rather than "Excess PIP." In addition, if you are on Medicare, then you now need "Full PIP" on your auto policy.
Would you need to rent a car if your vehicle was in the body shop for several days following an accident? If so, then you may wish to add "Car Rental Coverage" to your auto policy. We offer several different increments at very minimal pricing.
Do you want coverage for Towing / Road Service? You must have comprehensive or collision coverage on your auto to qualify for towing / road service coverage. Contact our agency for more information on this coverage.
Have you added more than $1,000 in after market Special Equipment to your vehicle? If so, you may want to add coverage for these extras. If you have added after market running boards, tow bar, wheel covers or rims, scanners, radios, stereos,or telephones, etc. then you may want to give us a call to make sure that these "non-standard" items are covered in the event of a loss.
Yes, extra coverages can add dollars to your auto premium but they are important, so how can you save money on your auto premiums? Consider raising your deductibles on Comprehensive and Collision coverages. While paying a higher deductible can be financially challenging should you have an accident, most of us can come up with $500 or $1,000 rather than $250 if we must. However, not having appropriate Bodily Injury Liability, Uninsured Motorist, or Underinsured Motorist Coverage can be a life changing situation. A wise choice is to raise your deductibles on comprehensive and collision and use the extra money to purchase more of the other liability related coverages.
If you are not insuring your home, condo, or renter's policies with MEEMIC, then you are missing out on the multi-policy discount. The multi-policy discount applies to the auto policy as well as the home, condo or renters policy. To receive the multi-car discount make sure that MEEMIC is insuring all of your eligible cars! Of course, keeping a "clean" driving record and driving vehicles such as domestic sedans (rather than sports cars, foreign cars, or SUV's) will also help keep your auto premiums lower. Your auto premiums are in part based on the car's retail price, cost to repair, overall safety record, and likelihood of theft. If you are wondering about the cost to insure a vehicle that you are considering purchasing, then you are welcome to call our office to check on the cost to insure that vehicle.
Are you familiar with the MCCA (Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association) Fee? The State of Michigan collects these fees through your automobile insurance policy and company when you pay your premium. All automobile insurance companies must charge this MCCA fee so that they can pass the fee to the state for the MCCA Fund. The good news is that Michigan's auto insurance no - fault law provides you catastrophic coverage for medical expenses that result from automobile accidents. This is a blessing for those who have severe accidents with huge medical costs. The bad news is that this MCCA benefit is expensive and getting more expensive as the cost of health care increases and because more people have recently needed this catastrophic coverage.
MEEMIC does not insure salvage title vehicles. We can insure salvage title vehicles through other companies that we represent such as Progressive.
Your MEEMIC auto policy provides the same coverages for your rental car that your policy covers on your normal car as long as you are driving in the United States or Canada and the rental is for personal (not business) use. However, MEEMIC does not cover rental commercial vehicles such as U-Haul trailers or Ryder trucks. For these commercial vehicles, you need to secure insurance through the rental company. Also, some rental car companies charge for "loss of use" when an accident causes one of their vehicles to be unrentable for a period of time while it is being fixed. If your rental car company charges for "loss of use," and you are renting in a state other than Florida, Arizona, or Texas, then you will want to purchase this "loss of use" coverage through the rental car company.
